BACK     DIAL-UP INSTRUCTIONS     SETTING UP A PPPoE     INTERNET TROUBLESHOOTING

Instructions for Setting up a PPPoE:

“Building a PPPoE Internet Access Interface on a Windows XP Computer”

Step 1

Microsoft Windows XP provides user-friendly tools for building point to point protocol over ethernet (PPPoE) connections.  Go to the “Start” menu in the Windows XP operating system, and highlight “Settings,” and then highlight “Network Connections.”  Right mouse click, and select “Open.”

This will open up the Network Connections dialogue box, as illustrated below:

In the upper left hand corner of this dialogue box, click on the “Create a new connection” option.

Step 2

This will open up the network connections wizard, as illustrated below:

Step 3

Click “Next.”  This will display the following options:

Leave the “Connect to the Internet” radio button selection highlighted.  Click “Next.”

Step 4

Select the “Set up my connection manually” radio button, as illustrated below:

Click “Next.”

Step 4

Select the “Connect using a  broadband connection that requires a user name and password” option, as illustrated below:

Click “Next.”

Step 5

Type in a name to reference the connection by, as illustrated below:

Click “Next.”

You can leave this at the default selection of “Anyone’s use” and click “Next.”

Step 6

Now type in the user’s username and password, as illustrated below:

You can leave the three check box options in this screen at their default for most user connections – some users may want to change these options, but the defaults should work just fine.  Click “Next.”

Step 7

You should see a screen that looks like the following illustration:

You’ll probably want to click the checkbox labeled “Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop” (as illustrated above.)  Click “Finish.”

The PPPoE connection is complete, and the user can now begin using the Internet connection.  At this point, whenever the user uses the Internet (email, web browser, etc.) then the connection should be built automatically for them in the background (if you left the “Use this as my default Internet connection” check box clicked in Step 6.)

You’re done!
